Terms worth explaining
reese bass
A wide, detuned electronic bass, a signature sound of drum and bass and dubstep.
303 acid bassline
The characteristic acid bassline, originally produced by the Roland TB-303.
sidechain compression
An effect that makes the bass "breathe" to the kick's rhythm, a signature of modern club sound.
log drum
A deep, resonant percussion sound that became the rhythmic signature of afrobeats/amapiano.
vinyl crackle
Vinyl crackle noise, adds a nostalgic, imperfect texture (lo-fi).
robotic vocoder
Vocals run through a vocoder, a strongly robotic effect (think Daft Punk).
call and response
A vocal structure where a lead voice and a choir answer each other.
cinematic dynamics
Wide swings in volume and intensity, typical of film scores.
deep dub delays
Long, spacious echoes, characteristic of dub and reggae.
filtered sweeps
A progressive filter sweep, often used for builds before a drop.
arpeggiated synth
A synth that plays a chord's notes one by one, rapidly, in a loop.
supersaw lead
A very rich lead synth, stacking several sawtooth waves, a signature trance/EDM sound.
