Suno Exclude Styles: How to Use It (and Why “No Drums” Fails)

You asked for a track without drums, or without autotune, and Suno gave you drums and autotune anyway. There's a dedicated field for this — and it works differently from the Style box.

What the Exclude field is

In Custom mode, Suno has an Exclude Styles option under the advanced settings. Whatever you type there — instruments, genres, vocal types — is treated as something to steer away from. Excluded items are shown with a minus sign next to your styles (for example -piano) so you can see what’s being applied.

Why “no drums” in the Style field is unreliable

The Style field is read as a description of what you want. Writing “no drums” there still puts the word “drums” in the prompt, and the model can latch onto it instead of the “no”. It sometimes works, but it’s a soft nudge. The dedicated Exclude field is the official, more dependable way to say “not this”.

How to choose good exclusions

  • Keep it to two or three. A long list of exclusions can crowd the prompt and make the result unpredictable.
  • Be specific. electric guitar is clearer than guitars if you still want an acoustic one.
  • Name what replaces it. If you exclude a dense layer, describe in the Style field what should carry the rhythm or texture instead.
  • Expect “less”, not “never”. An exclusion lowers the chance of something appearing; it doesn’t guarantee that every generation is free of it.

Common exclusions that help

  • autotune — for more natural vocals
  • drums or percussion — for ambient, solo-instrument or intimate tracks
  • male vocals / female vocals — to lock the vocal gender
  • electric guitar, synth — to keep an acoustic or organic feel

When to use it (and when not to)

Use Exclude when a specific sound keeps appearing that you don’t want. If instead your track is just generic, exclusions won’t fix it — a sharper Style prompt will. And if you want a track with no singing at all, read how to make an instrumental in Suno.
