Suno “Lyrics Contain Copyrighted Material” Error: Causes and Fixes
Suno rejected your lyrics or your uploaded audio as copyrighted. The check looks for text that matches known protected songs — here’s what commonly triggers it and how to get past it legitimately.
What the message means
Messages like “Your lyrics contain copyrighted material” or “Uploaded audio contains copyrighted lyrics” mean Suno’s checks found text that looks too close to existing, protected lyrics. The checks work by matching what you submitted — typed lyrics, or lyrics recognized in uploaded audio — against known works.
Common causes
- You pasted or lightly edited real song lyrics. Changing a word or two usually isn’t enough to avoid a match.
- A famous line or hook slipped in — a chorus you half-remember can be enough.
- Uploaded audio contains a protected song — a cover, a sample, or a recording that includes someone else’s words.
- Names and trademarks in the text, which can trigger the same family of filters (see the inappropriate material guide).
How to fix it
- Rewrite the lyrics in your own words. Keep the idea, replace the phrasing entirely — not just a few words.
- Remove any line you copied or half-remembered from another song, especially catchy hooks.
- Check uploaded audio. Only upload material you have full rights to. If a recording contains someone else’s song, the error is expected.
- Test by trimming. Remove sections one at a time to find which lines trigger the block, then rewrite that part.
If you wrote it yourself and it still flags
False positives can happen, particularly with short or very common phrases. Rephrase the flagged line, keep lyrics more specific and personal, and try again. If you believe the block is a mistake, contact Suno’s support with the details.
